Q. What material
do you cut these woodblocks out of ?
A. The material
we use is MDF (Medium Density Fibreboard) which has excellent qualities for
this product.
Q. Do you cut them out of grained soft
or hardwoods ?
A. We are happy to consider cutting custom orders in certain
grained woods. Please email us with your requirements.
Q.
Do you make these woodblocks in bigger sizes ?
A. Woodblocks of up to 10 characters
can be cut in bigger sizes.

Q.
Do they need finishing with varnish or paint ?
A. No they don't. Most people are happy with them as they are.
They will however, darken slightly with age the same as most woods do.
Q. If I wanted to apply a finish, what should
I use ?
A. We
recommend using oil based paints or varnishes. If possible, thin the first
coat which will make it much easier to apply.
Subsequent coats don't need thinning. The
amount of coats needed will depend on the finish you choose
but in general, 2 coats are enough.
Water based finishes will raise the fibres slightly on the first
coat making it necessary to lightly sand these off before
applying the second coat.
This is not a problem on the flat surfaces,
but sanding all those internal surfaces is no fun.
Q. What about spraying them ?
A.
In our opinion, car spray paint is the easiest and quickest finish to apply.
Done properly in short bursts to avoid
runs, a high quality finish can be achieved much quicker than normal paints
and varnishes !

Is this the only product you make ?
A. Due to many requests from customers
for individual wooden letters, we now make a range in sizes from 50mm to 200mm.
